StyleTaggingTM is the process of applying little "codes" in each paragraph of the manuscript to indicate style changes (such as italics) or hierarchical changes (such as heads, subheads, and lists). It is done in the word processor at the writing, content editing, or copyediting phase before layout begins. The codes are nothing more than text entries, such as "[C]" or "<I>" (without the quotes).
StyleTaggingTM ensures the intent of the author's or editor's content. In the layout stage, most of the bolding, italicizing, larger point sizes, justification, indents, etc., that the author or editor worked so hard to stylize is erased through the import process!
Tagging your content with codes that indicate style or hierarchy will ensure that your content is preserved and formatted according to your intentions.
Who Cares?
You will when your untagged book results in unnecessary rejection or expense to fix it. Many times, as our team is producing a book, structural problems will arise in the content as it is being laid out in pages and typeset. For example... a chapter might have several levels of subheads and lists. Those items might not have been constructed consistently with one another by the writer or editor. When this happens, it can be costly to backtrack and fix the content so that it is presented in a hierarchically sound and consistent manner in the layout. This is critical in good book design. Book reviewers, buyers, and consumers notice a poorly planned book... it just looks confusing to read.
This white paper will explain additional useful reasons for tagging and how to do it.
